According to the British newspaper <em>The Telegraph<\/em> (10 May 2012), the plane was an American-built <em>Kittyhawk P-40<\/em> which had crashed in a remote region of the Sahara in June 1942. The wreckage of the downed fighter plane was recently discovered by a Polish oil company. There was no evidence of the pilot, and it is presumed he set out on foot and perished in the desert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?attachment_id=861\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-861\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-861\" title=\"The English Patient\" src=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wenglishpatient.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wenglishpatient.jpg 192w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/Wenglishpatient-99x150.jpg 99w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a>Perilous flights across sandy wastes have inspired novelists and movie producers alike, from Elleston Trevor&#8217;s 1964 novel <em>The Flight of the Phoenix<\/em> to Michael Ondaatje&#8217;s 1992 novel <em>The English Patient<\/em>. For the latter, Ondaatje received the Canadian Governor General&#8217;s Award and also the Booker Prize for Fiction.
