Truman, en route home from the <a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?p=6376\">Potsdam Conference<\/a> aboard the <em>USS Augusta<\/em>, met with King George VI, who was on\u00a0board the British battlecruiser\u00a0<em>HMS Renown<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The atomic bomb was a focus\u00a0of discussion. At least one of Truman&#8217;s party, Admiral William\u00a0Leahy, was sure that the power of the bomb had been exaggerated and remarked that it sounded like a \u2018professor\u2019s dream.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Later, after he had become fully aware of the bomb&#8217;s destructive power, Leahy condemned the atomic bombing of Hiroshima\u00a0and Nagasaki as barbaric.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u00a0in the war, off the coast of Plymouth, England, President Harry S.
