The Siege of Bastogne had begun.<\/p>\n<p>Low lying fog kept Allied aircraft grounded until 23 December. Meanwhile, the outnumbered Americans fought off assaults by Germany&#8217;s elite SS panzer divisions.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6207\" style=\"width: 113px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?attachment_id=6207\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6207\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6207\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-6207\" src=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/WAirbornePatch-103x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"103\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/WAirbornePatch-103x150.jpg 103w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/WAirbornePatch.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shoulder patch of the US 101st Airborne Division [Public domain]<\/p><\/div>The siege lasted through Christmas and the town was not fully secured until the US 3rd Army&#8217;s counteroffensive on 14 January 1945.<\/p>\n<p>The German army&#8217;s Ardennes offensive, known as the <em>Battle of the Bulge<\/em>, was\u00a0meant to push through the Allied lines and reach Antwerp. Hitler&#8217;s\u00a0intention was to prevent the Allies from using the port for landing supplies to support their armies that were poised to advance into Germany.<\/p>\n<p>On 15 January 1945, it was clear that Hitler&#8217;s plan had failed and the Fuehrer left his headquarters on the Western Front and returned by train to Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week in the war, on 18 December 1944, the US 101st Airborne Division was ordered to Bastogne in Belgium\u00a0to defend that town&#8217;s\u00a0important crossroads against the recently launched German offensive in the Ardennes.
