Plateau des Glieres [Author: Gnomefilliere, Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported, GNU FDL]<\/p><\/div>This week in the war, on 26 March 1944, a powerful force of German troops and pro-Vichy \u2018Milice<\/em>\u2019 \u00a0launched an assault against the Free French maquisards<\/em>, who were holding out on the Gli\u00e8res Plateau in the mountainous Haute-Savoie region of eastern France.<\/p>\n

The maquisards<\/em> (members of the Free French maquis<\/em>) had been gathering on the plateau since the end of January. They continued to grow in number throughout February and were supplied with arms and ammunition by the RAF.<\/p>\n

By March, the maquisards<\/em> numbered well over 400. The Germans attacked with aircraft and with ground troops, supported by Milice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0scale of the final attack on 26 March caused the maquisards<\/em>, who recognized that they were massively outnumbered,\u00a0to scatter and flee. Many maquisards<\/em> were killed in battle. Many were\u00a0hunted down and killed in the days that followed.<\/p>\n
