Admiral Jean de Laborde, commander of the French fleet, promptly gave the order that his sailors should scuttle their ships. If such a large and modern fleet had\u00a0fallen into German and Italian\u00a0hands, the balance of naval power in the Mediterranean would have shifted away from the Allies.<\/p>\n<p>Ships sunk included three battleships: <em>Strasbourg<\/em>, <em>Dunkerque<\/em>, and <em>Provence<\/em>; also several cruisers, including the <em>Colbert<\/em>, which exploded. Numerous destroyers were also sunk.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the submarines ignored the command to scuttle and sailed across the Mediterranean to the North African ports of Oran and Algiers which, since <a title=\"Operation Torch\" href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?p=5351\">Operation Torch<\/a>, had been\u00a0in Allied hands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week in the war, on 27 November 1942, German panzers rolled into the French port of Toulon.
