Six were stolen in France.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh was <em>The Halt<\/em>, by Dutch artist Pieter Jansz van Asch&#8212;whose self-portrait is shown to the right. French Resistance heroine <a title=\"Rose Valland\" href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?p=2258\">Rose Valland<\/a> played a major role in the recovery of many such works of art.<\/p>\n<p>Hitler&#8217;s &#8216;Linz project&#8217; is described in the book by Anglo-Austrian journalist Charles de Jaeger: <em>The Linz File: Hitler&#8217;s Plunder of Europe&#8217;s Art<\/em> (Wiley, 1981).
