They forbade ceremonies of any kind, even church services or commemorations at war memorials. When the time came to make a stand, it was the young people&#8212;rather than the veterans&#8212;who defied the ban.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?attachment_id=2923\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2923\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2923\" title=\"Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, WWII Paris [Public domain, Wikimedia]\" src=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Warmistice3-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Warmistice3-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Warmistice3-118x150.jpg 118w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/11\/Warmistice3.jpg 472w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/><\/a>French students staged a massive protest against the Occupation and paraded along the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es&#8212;which, since the fall of France, had become the purview of the Wehrmacht and its marching bands. The plaque located in the pavement near France&#8217;s tomb of the unknown soldier commemorates the event.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the students were arrested.
