We are not talking Wellington versus Bonaparte at Waterloo. Rather:\u00a0Winston Churchill versus Marshal Philip Petain, leader of Vichy France.<\/p>\n<p>Their war began in earnest on 3 July 1940, when battleships of the Royal Navy lobbed 15inch shells into the French fleets at anchor in the Algerian ports of Mers-el-Kebir and Oran. The French admiral had rejected the demand to surrender and so the British opened fire.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?attachment_id=1399\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1399\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1399\" title=\"French battleship Bretagne, about to capsize\" src=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wbretagne.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wbretagne.jpg 264w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wbretagne-150x108.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 264px) 100vw, 264px\" \/><\/a>The battleship <em>Bretagne<\/em> was sunk, and the <em>Province<\/em> and <em>Dunkerque<\/em> were severly damaged. Almost 1,300 French sailors perished that day.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the south of England, French vessels at anchor in Plymouth and Portsmouth were boarded and forcibly taken over by British sailors.<\/p>\n<p>Petain responded to the attacks by ordering Vichy planes to strike the Royal Navy&#8217;s base in Gibralter. He cut off diplomatic relations&#8212;meaning that the British could not maintain a consulate or embassy in Vichy. (Recall that Vichy was neutral. The USA, for example, kept a consulate there until after Pearl Harbour).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/?attachment_id=1400\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1400\" title=\"Don't forget Oran!\" src=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wnoubliezpasoran.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"165\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wnoubliezpasoran.jpg 165w, https:\/\/secondbysecondworldwar.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/Wnoubliezpasoran-109x150.jpg 109w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 165px) 100vw, 165px\" \/><\/a>The addition of the French navy to the navies of Italy and Germany would certainly cause Britain to lose the Mediterranean, and likely the war. Churchill&#8217;s grim determination that the French fleet must never fall into Hitler&#8217;s grasp was a watershed decision&#8212;one of several, during those early days when Britain stood alone.<\/p>\n<p>The blood of 1,300 Frenchmen was the price to keep Great Britain in the war.\u00a0It showed the world, particular the Americans, that Britain would see things through to the end.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>England&#8217;s last war against France&#8212;as recounted in Colin Smith&#8217;s book of that very title&#8212;was not fought in Napoleonic times.
